Not sure about your skin type?

Most people guess their skin type from how it behaves at 6pm, after a day of weather, makeup and whatever they put on it that morning. That is the wrong moment to look. Here is the version that actually tells you something. It takes about half an hour, and you only have to do it once.

The bare face test

  1. 01Wash your face with a plain cleanser. Lukewarm water, nothing scrubby, nothing foaming hard enough to squeak.
  2. 02Pat dry and put nothing on. No toner, no moisturiser, no sunscreen. This is the part people skip.
  3. 03Wait 30 minutes. Stay indoors, out of a fan or direct sun. Do not touch your face.
  4. 04Look in good light and, more importantly, feel. Check your forehead, nose, chin and both cheeks separately. They often disagree, and that disagreement is the answer.

What you found, and what it means

After 30 bare minutes Your skin type Where to start
Tight everywhere. Maybe flaking around the nose or brows. No shine at all. Dry Shop dry skin
Shine across the forehead, nose and chin, and on the cheeks too. Pores easy to see. Oily Shop oily skin
Shine down the middle of your face, but the cheeks feel tight or normal. Combination Shop combination skin
Redness, stinging, warmth or itching, whatever the oil is doing. Sensitive Shop sensitive skin
Comfortable. Not tight, not shiny, nothing asking for attention. Balanced Shop balanced skin

The blotting paper check

If the mirror is not settling it, press a sheet of blotting paper or a plain tissue to each area in turn and hold it to the light.

  • Soaked through from every area: oily.
  • Marked from the nose and forehead only: combination.
  • Barely marked anywhere: dry, or balanced if your skin also felt comfortable.

Worth knowing before you decide

Sensitive is not a fourth option

It sits on top of the others. You can be dry and sensitive, or oily and sensitive. If your skin reacts, treat that first and pick products by how gentle they are, not by oil alone.

Oily and dehydrated at once is normal

Oil and water are separate things. Skin can shine and still feel tight, which usually means the barrier is leaking water, not that you need to strip more oil off it.

Your type moves

Season, travel, age, hormones and whatever you used last month all shift it. Repeat this test when your skin starts behaving differently, not every week.

When to see a dermatologist

Deep tender lumps, a rash spreading outward, marks that are not fading, or no change after twelve weeks of a consistent routine. Those are not a skin type question.

Still not sure?

That is a perfectly fine place to land. Start with a barrier routine, which suits almost everyone, and let your skin tell you the rest over the next few weeks.
